Welcome to our self placement process for General Education English courses! We're excited to help you find the right starting point for your academic journey here at Bates Technical College.

Placement is a way for us to ensure you begin your general education courses at a level that matches your current skills and knowledge. Instead of relying solely on traditional prerequisites, we offer a more flexible approach that recognizes your unique background and experiences.

Remember, the goal of this process is to ensure you start your math courses at a level that challenges you appropriately and sets you up for success. Check Your Degree Requirement

Review the college course catalog to understand your specific degree requirements.

What to Know:

Most Associate (AAS & AAS-T) degrees at Bates require credits in general education courses across three distribution areas: communications (English), quantitative (Mathematics), and humanities/social sciences/natural sciences.
For English, you typically need to complete at least 5 credits in 100-level or above courses.
Important: Some programs may have different or more specific general education requirements. Always check the specific degree requirements for each program.
Tip: Consider noting down the English course requirement before proceeding to the self-guided placement.

Complete a self-guided english placement for a current assessment of your skills.

Step 3

Enroll (Register) in Classes

Once you complete the above processes, you will fill out a form to record your placement decision and schedule a meeting with advisor/counselor. Your results will be sent to you and your career advisor/counselor. They will help place you in the appropriate level of general education courses required for your degree or credential. After this, you'll be ready to enroll in classes!

Note: All new students must meet with a career/academic advisor or high school counselor to enroll in their first quarter classes.
