 Course Title:  ECED 170, Environments, 3 credits

 Course Description: This course is an introduction to the methods used to develop developmentally appropriate learning environments.  Students identify, demonstrate, and evaluate criteria for planning learning environments for young children including the selection of equipment, materials, and supplies and the best use of physical space.

Course Policies:
Grading Criteria: You must  complete all assignments, quizzes and tests to pass this class. All assignment content will be evaluated in consideration of Developmentally Appropriate Practice. Assignments 67%, Discussion 6%, Quizzes 10%, Final 17%
Prerequisite Knowledge and Competencies- Student must have opportunities to observe or participate in a formal early childhood setting as a parent, observer,assistant or teacher. This is a 1st year course within the 2 year degree program and most individuals can participate with approval from the ECE setting. (Some settings will require a formal background check.)
Required Technical Skills- ability to submit and attach files to email, create PDF's and send photos. Basic use of word and word processing and creating documents, using spell check and grammar correcting applications.
Late Work: Late assignments will be discounted by 1 grade level- an “A” paper becomes a “B” etc. All assignments are due by _. No late work accepted after that date. No make-up of final tests without prior instructor permission.

Extra Credit- As assigned by instructor or for correction of mistakes.

Classroom Conduct: Follow Bates Technical College Behaviors checklist & Rules of Conduct in the Bates Student Handbook. You will find policies and information to support the successful completion of your education at Bates Technical College. It is every student's responsibility to become familiar with policies found in the
handbook. You will find policies on: Plagiarism, Attendance, Withdrawal, Complaints/appeals, Grading, Code of conduct and Netiquette.

ONLINE WORK/Course Organization: Students will work through lectures, assignments and quizzes online in the prescribed order via the MODULES tab. Each student is provided with a college email address. In this program it is a requirement to use your Bates email to communicate with the instructor with comments or questions. You will be placed in the canvas system to access course materials, Make sure your canvas is correctly connected to receive emails and notices. Students will attend class lectures and submit assignments online via Canvas. Each assignment has a designated point value and students can evaluate their
progress by tracking assignment, rubric and quiz points. Some assignments may be resubmitted for additional points with permission of the instructor.
Assignments can be turned in via Canvas or email by the due date (12 midnight). In respect of all student's assignments, the instructor will grade assignments no later than 1 week after receiving them.

Internet Use: for research (must be quoted) For online classes, students must have access to computers and digital cameras. All assignment content will be evaluated in consideration of Developmentally Appropriate Practice and NAEYC Code of Ethics.

Absence and Attendance: Students choosing not to participate MUST ask to be withdrawn prior to Feb.16 or the student will receive a grade for the
class. Students wishing to have an incomplete must meet the college criteria: “the request is due to an unusual or emergency circumstances beyond the student’s control.” An incomplete (IC) is not a student right, but is an instructor granted extension of the time needed to finish and submit required work the student was unable to complete during the regular course time frame. See pg 6 of the Bates Student Handbook for further information.

Make-up Exam: By prior arrangement with the instructor only.

Cheating, Plagiarism: Definition: In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source. This definition applies to texts published in print or on-line, to manuscripts, and to the work of other student writers. (Council of Writing Program Administrators) Students committing plagiarism be withdrawn.

You must attain a GPA (grade point average) of C+ or better to meet the requirements to be admitted into the second year program.

Netiquette: Netiquette (or internet etiquette) is the guidelines for proper communication in an online setting. Here is a partial list of guidelines for the class.
 Treat everyone with respect. Only address people in a way that you would be comfortable being addressed.
 Avoid any offensive language. NO ALL CAPS!!! (This is considered shouting)
 Always reread everything before hitting "send." Ask yourself, how will the recipients interpret this?
 Be cautious with using humor online. What you think is funny can easily be interpreted as sarcastic, mean-spirited, or even abusive when the context is
removed. Make sure your posts are on topic.
 Use correct spelling and grammar. No textspeak in an academic setting.
 Do not respond to any posting with "I agree", "No", or "Me too" Please respond with complete thoughts explaining why you agree or disagree.
 Enhance the class by speaking up while keeping an open mind. Do not be afraid to hold a minority opinion. Conversely, appreciate those who express
potentially unpopular opinions. You can disagree respectfully.
 Follow basic email protocol. Use a descriptive subject line. Don't hit reply all unless your response is truly for the entire class. Never spam.
 Protect the privacy of yourself and your classmates. Do not release personal information, including information that classmates may not want posted
(when in doubt, ask them). Remember, the internet is permanent.

Wed Jan 18, 2017- Classroom Schedule (Due)
Create a poster of your daily classroom schedule using the criteria listed in Chapter 3 pages 52-62. The poster should be suitable for posting in the classroom. The grade will be based on neatness, appearance and developmentally appropriate schedule. Photos of the poster can be submitted online or you can turn in the original poster to my office at Bates Technical College South Campus by October 3rd Due date.Photos must show the entire poster and I must be able to read everything on the poster.

Wed Feb 1, 2017- Learning Centers-Transitions Essay (Due)

 List ten classroom  Learning Centers discussed in your text book including outdoor area as one of the learning centers. For each learning center list five items (excluding furniture) that you would purchase to use in that learning center. At least one of the items listed in each learning center must be a multicultural item that reflects the diversity of the children in your classroom.

Room Arrangement Floor Plan

Create a room arrangement floor plan on a 22" x 28" piece of poster board. Create a room arrangement using any art medium of your choosing. Art mediums can include but are not limited to  colored pencils, markers, crayons, cut pieces of paper or fabric and paint. Include at least eight learning center areas. Room arrangement should meet the criteria listed  in chapter 5 of the text book. You may choose which age group classroom you are making a floor plan for: infant, toddler , preschool or school age.  Include at least eight learning center areas and an outdoor area. Room arrangement should meet the criteria listed  in chapter 5 of the text book.

Grading criteria will include amount of learning centers, placement of centers in relation to others e.g. quiet activities near other quiet centers, labeling of areas and furnishings,neatness of project and amount of detail put into the project. Project must be turned in to me through Canvas or by bringing it to my office at Bates Technical College south Campus Building  E, room 122 G. The floor plan should be turned in to instructor's office by due date. It may be submitted through Canvas using photos of the final floor plan. Photos of the project can be submitted only if it is readable and clear so that the grading criteria can be met.
